Ongoing Lessons From the Pandemic: Addressing Youth Mental Health and Opportunities for Resilience

Focus topics included

Educational issues, parenting concerns, social connections, uses of technology devices, and other emotional and behavioral factors, with special consideration of the impact on Homeless Youth and Youth of Color. This presentation will emphasize strategies for assessment and social emotional wellness supports as we move forward. This will be especially informative for mental health professionals, parents, educators, physicians, community members, and legal and public health officials.

Dacher Keltner, Ph.D., is the Founding Director of the Greater Good Science Center and a Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley.

Joyce Dorado, Ph.D., is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of California San Francisco at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, and the Co-Founder and Director of UCSF Healthy Environments and Response to Trauma in Schools (HEARTS).

Course Credit for CEU/CME:

California Registered Nurses, Occupational and Speech Therapists: This course is approved by the Dominican Santa Cruz Board of Registered Nursing #881 for 4.0 contact hours.

Physical Therapists: This course is approved by Dominican Hospital for 4.0 contact hours (or 0.4CE). Dominican Hospital is an agency recognized by the Physical Therapy Board of California to approve courses for continuing education units (CEUs).

LCSW/ LMFT/ LPCC/LEP: SCC Behavioral Health is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor 4 hours continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs. SCC Behavioral Health maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. Course meets the qualifications for 4 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.  CAMFT Provider #71620.

Physicians, Physicians Assistants, PhDs:* The AAFP has reviewed Ongoing Lessons From the Pandemic: Addressing Youth Mental Health and Opportunities for Resilience and deemed it acceptable for up to 4.00 Live AAFP Prescribed credits. Term of Approval is from 03/11/2022 to 03/11/2022. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

*AAFP is an approved provider of CME by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education which is accepted by the California Board of Psychologists for continuing education.

PARTIAL CREDIT WILL NOT BE GIVEN FOR CEU: To receive course credit, one must provide name and license information, arrive on time, stay to the end of the program, and complete and turn-in the course evaluation. Attendance codes will be provided and monitored through Zoom, which generates time stamps confirming join/leave times. Continuing Education Hours are not offered for breaks or lunch hour. Attendance and evaluation will be managed by Health Improvement Partnership (HIP) of Santa Cruz County, Continuing Medical Education provider. HIP will not be able to issue partial credit for CEU, or credit for delayed viewing of the event due to technical issues or unforeseen personal emergencies. HIP apologizes in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

Cancellation Policy:

Requests for refunds made at least five days before the start of the symposium will be granted. We reserve the right to cancel any class within five days prior to the class start date with a full refund to participants. We reserve the right to make program changes in the event of speaker illness, natural, or unforeseen disaster. No refunds will be made if the registrant does not attend the conference.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the event, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify contextual factors that influence the mental health and well-being of youth and young adults, such as technology, homelessness, and marginalization.
  2. Recognize the impact of stress and trauma on the mental health of youth and young adults, including related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  3. Use assessment tools to evaluate resilience of youth and young adults in need.
  4. Implement effective social emotional wellness supports for vulnerable youth and young adults.
