Overview:

The 2010 symposium was entitled Perspectives on Mental Illness: Seldom Heard Stories. It helped foster an open dialogue among a broad range of health care professionals, school personnel, law enforcement officials, as well as consumers of mental health services and their families.

This educational event presented concepts regarding the state of behavioral health care from the perspective of the consumer, professional provider, and the family member. Individual presentations were followed by a moderated panel discussion. A review of current research and consensus based findings, along with recent treatment options was also presented.

Presenters:

Pete Earley, former Washington Post Investigative Reporter and author of “CRAZY: A Father’s Search through America’s Mental Health Madness”. Pete will use his personal story to illustrate how difficult it is to get a loved one with a severe mental illness meaningful help.

Fred Frese, Ph.D., is a psychologist with more than forty years experience in public mental health care and is presently coordinator of the Summit County (Ohio) Recovery Project. He is also a consumer, having been diagnosed with schizophrenia as a young Marine Corps officer. He is the longest serving member of the Board of Directors of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

Lizzie is the author of DETOUR: My Bipolar Road trip in 4-D, which was published by Atria Books in 2002. Since publication, Lizzie and Detour have appeared on many prominent TV, newspaper, magazine, radio and web outlets including CNN, Fox, ABC News, The Jane Pauley Show, The Judith Regan Show, The Connie Chung Show, The NY Post, The Village Voice, The Saturday Evening Post, Rhode Island Monthly, NPR, CBS Radio and Nylon Magazine. Detour was excerpted in TIME Magazine and HBO Films optioned Detour for feature film. Lizzie worked as a consultant and field producer on an award winning one hour DETOUR inspired documentary for MTV, entitled True Life: I’m Bipolar.

Leslie Tremaine is currently the director of Santa Cruz County Mental Health and Substance Abuse services. Leslie has an extensive background in mental health including past State Director of Mental Health for Virginia.
